All agree that the beach is the single most attractive tourist and property owner attraction to Stone Harbor. A million of our tax dollars and 3 million of state tax dollars (really ours too) were spent to rebuild the beach from 98th to 111th St. just this past November....a good thing too. If one pictures how much dune would have been lost over the past 6 weeks if the new beach hadn't been there, the expenditure was worth it. Maybe our major concern about the beach is not only sand containment, but also cost containment. It seems that the federal and state governments will struggle with money to continue to replenish the beaches. The recent replenishment cost all of us 2 and one half cents per each $100 of your assessment on your Stone Harbor tax bill. Our problem seems to be what some call a "catch 22". We can't afford not to provide the beach that most people come here to enjoy, but one must ask if we can afford a million dollars (maybe more with no Fed or State help) every four or five years to replenish that beach, and that was less than half of our beaches. Do we forego other projects to reserve money for the beaches? We are not alone with this problem, but each of us is alone when we write the tax bill check. We would like to hear your comments on this issue. As long as they are civil comments the Captain will even print them with out your name.
